Statement:
I sign the subject's inner energy onto the "canvas," thinking of Asian calligraphy and classic Asian sumi-e painting techniques as I do so. This is especially evident in my Indian portraits, done with Sumi-e inks, and my copper sculptures. My work impressionistically uses color freely as a reflectance of inner light, creating expressionistic power.
People have an ancient need to discover forms, be it Elvis in chipped paint, Jesus in the leaves of a tree or a saint on a discolored wall. I believe it is part of our ancient survival skills. With my latest canvases, my goal is to just barely create forms so that the viewer "discovers" them and so that there is room for the viewer to see his or her own forms. I see such discovery as a spiritual adventure.
